GR 8098: An Introduction to Restorative Practice
Monday June 16, 9.00 - 3.30 pm Restorative practice provides a no blame approach to dealing with harmful behaviours. This practice can be used in the classroom or yard between the teacher and student/s to deal with inappropriate behaviours. When both parties feel they have been listened to, issues are far more likely to be resolved, as there is no ongoing resentment as in a win/lose outcome. This is a great starting point or equally useful as follow to the Terry O'Connell presentation in 2007. Thursday September 4, 9.00-3.30 pm Community conferencing is used to deal with those incidents that are sufficiently serious for suspension or exclusion of students. This is a powerful method to address bullying issues. This day will take participants through the formal structure needed (from the interview process to seating, the script, documentation and follow up) to address what has often been a long and unresolved issue. Child and Adolescent Case Management
This is a tailored 2 day training program for year level coordinators, student welfare coordinators, student welfare coordinators, primary welfare officers and school leadership teams. The program teaches staff how to use basic counseling skills, effectively deal with student case management, provide appropriate intervention , improve record keeping and build a preventative culture. Topics covered include giving and receiving feedback, developing a framework for intervention management, referrals and working with students’ families.
Facilitators: Swinburne University Psychology Clinic Dates and Venue: to be confirmed. Targeted: Year Level Coordinators, PWO’s, SWC’s, Assistant Principals Cost: $200 for 2 days (subsidised by Gippsland Regional Office)
Drug Education Evaluation and Monitoring - DEEM
The DEEM student and teacher surveys in conjunction with the Attitudes to Schools survey assist school to evaluate and monitor effective drug education in terms of student outcomes and gauge student knowledge and attitudes. Participation in DEEM will provide the school with valuable and detailed information on the effectiveness of the drug education curriculum, student welfare support and prevention programs. It will also highlight areas of strength and areas for improvement which will assist the school in review and continuous improvement process. DEEM is highly recommended for schools due for review in 2009. Schools that are eligible to participate in DEEM will be contacted early in Term 2. Participation and involvement in DEEM is supported with a grant of $2000, places are limited.
