The achievements of senior Koorie students from across Gippsland were recognised at a presentation celebration at Monash University Gippsland Campus last week.
This year 60 Koorie students from nine schools across Gippsland completed Years 10, 11 and 12; a figure that has progressively increased over recent years.
Supported by the Central and East Gippsland Regional Koorie Education Committees, this was the fifth year the event has been held to celebrate the achievements of senior Koorie students within the region.
“It’s important to recognise the achievements of all young people. Completing Year 10, 11 and 12 is a real accomplishment, and one worth celebrating,” said Local Aboriginal Education Consultative Group Chairperson, Zack Haddock.
“This event was an opportunity to highlight the students’ achievement and encourage them to continue with their education.”
Schools represented at the presentation were Lowanna Secondary College, Leongatha Secondary College, Orbost Secondary College, Sale College, Bairnsdale Secondary College, Traralgon Secondary College, Kurnai Secondary College, Drouin Secondary College and Cann River P-12 School.
Students and their parents toured the campus before participating in a panel discussion of past Koorie students and Monash staff. Finally, presentations were made to each student.
“The event provides an opportunity to bring together those students completing University, VCE and VCAL with those now beginning these stages of their education.
“Starting university, VCE or VCAL can be overwhelming for most young people. Hearing others talk about their experiences helps build peer support between students who are experiencing similar situations.
“The day enabled students to be exposed to the university in an informal setting while highlighting what they can achieve by continuing with their education,” said Mr Haddock.
