Gippsland Region has developed a strategy as part of a broader statewide initiative to improve literacy levels in schools.
The statewide initiative aims to build the capacity of teachers, assist schools to develop whole school approaches to improving student achievement levels, and complement the support currently available to schools by providing intensive support to selected schools.
The goal of the Gippsland Design for Literacy Improvement in Gippsland 2007-2008 is to improve literacy levels in Gippsland over the next three to five years. Over the next three years the main focus is on Years 2, 3 and 4.
The strategies for the Gippsland Design for Literacy Improvement fall into two categories:
Category one: Provide intensive support in Years 2, 3 and 4 in selected schools.
This strategy is resourced by the special budget allocation as part of a State initiative to appoint four literacy specialists.
In Gippsland the appointed Literacy Specialists will be supporting schools through GLIS (Gippsland Literacy Improvement Strategy). This involves each literacy specialist working with one teacher and one coordinator from six schools.
See Appendix 3 in Design for Literacy Improvement in Gippsland 2007-2008 below.
Category two: Extend and intensify current support and professional development programs available to all school 0-12.
This strategy seeks to give greater cohesion and clearer delineation to current regional provisions for literacy.
Support currently available to all schools includes: Pre-school Programs, Early Years Initial Training, Language Support Programs, Speech Pathologist Screening, Reading Recovery, Prep – 4 Intervention, Prep – 6 Co-ordinator Support, Secondary Literacy Intervention Network and Post–Compulsory Literacy/English Performance Improvement Strategies.
